Categories provide a useful way to group related blog posts. He may want to create categories for the different topics he covers on his blog. For example, if you have articles covering a specific music genre, you might want to group them into a category.

Categories not only help organize posts, but she can also use categories to display posts in multiple places on her site, making it easier for her visitors to find what they are looking for. For instance:

Add categories

  1. Go to your board
  2. Click Posts → Categories.
  3. Click Add New Category .
  4. Give the new category a name and description.
  5. Click Add to save the new category.

By default, the category will be added as “Top Level Category”. To create subcategories, move the switch and select the top-level category you want to associate this category with.

For example, a food blog might have categories for cakes, pies, and ice cream, all within a top-level desserts category.

Select a default category

A default category is a category that a post is assigned to by default when you create a new post. All posts must have a category. By default, the category is Uncategorized.

  1. Go to Posts → Categories in your board.

While it is not possible to delete the “Uncategorized” Category, you can rename it to whatever you want by clicking the Edit option in the drop-down menu next to the category name.

Categorize your Posts

  1. In your dashboard, click on Posts.
  2. Click on the post you want to assign to a category.
  3. Under Post Settings on the right, expand the Category option.
  4. Click the checkbox next to the category you want the post to be assigned to
  5. Click Update or Publish to apply the changes to that post.

You can select multiple categories for a single post to show in. However, you should not add more than five to 15 categories and tags to a post.

You can remove a post from a category by unchecking the box next to the category name.

New Category from Within A Post

It is possible to quickly add a new category through the post’s Post Settings by clicking on Add New Category.

You will be able to give the category a name and select a parent category.

If you want to add a description to the category, go back to your dashboard and navigate to Posts → Categories to edit the new category.

Customize Category Pages

A category page is a page that displays all of the posts assigned to a specific category. By default, there is an Archives page created for each category. The archives page will have a URL, or site address, of something like https://yourgroovysite.com/category/categoryname/.


If your site is using a theme that takes advantage of the Site Editor, you can customize the Archives page’s template. Otherwise, it is styled by the theme you have selected.

You can also create a custom category page using any WordPress block that allows you to filter by category. These blocks include:

  • Query Loop block
  • Blog Posts block
  • Post Carousel block

The default Archives page and any page that uses the blocks mentioned above will automatically update with every new post you publish with that category.

Link to Category Pages

In Your Menu

You can link directly to the Category Archives page from your site’s menu. When your visitors click on the link, they’ll navigate to the archives for the category you linked to. For step-by-step instructions, check out the following guide.

If you’ve created a custom category page, you can link to it in your site’s menu like any other page on your site.

If you have added a category to your site’s menu but do not see any posts on the category page, or a message that says the content can’t be found, this means no posts have been assigned to that category. Once you publish posts with the category they will automatically show on the category page.

Edit or Delete Categories

To edit or delete a category, go to Posts → Categories. Then, click the ellipses (three dots) on the right of any category to find the following options:

  • Edit: Change the name, parent category, and category description.
  • Delete: Delete the category. This removes the category from your site but does not delete any posts which had that category.
  • Set as default: Assign as the default category.

Use Categories to Get Discovered

People can add specific tags and topics in their WordPress.com Reader for topics they’re interested in following. Then, when your post uses a category they’ve added to their topics, they’ll see your post in their Reader. Therefore, assigning tags and categories to your post increases the chance that other WordPress.com users will see your content.

However, you don’t want irrelevant content on the topics listings or search, and neither do we. That’s why we limit the number of tags and categories used on a public topic listing. Five to 15 tags/categories is a good number to add to each of your posts. The more categories you use, the less likely your post will be selected for inclusion in the topics listings. Learn more about Topics here.

Bulk Delete Categories

You can also edit your categories in bulk by going to Posts → Categories.

These instructions are referring to the WP Admin interface. To view this interface, click the View tab in the upper right corner and select Classic view.

To bulk delete any categories, check all categories you want to be deleted, and in the Bulk Actions drop-down above the list, select “Delete,” then click the “Apply” button.

Find the Category ID

You may need to provide the Category ID for access restrictions on specific membership plugins or to implement custom CSS on a particular category page.

You can find the category ID for a category by going to Posts → Categories.

These instructions are referring to the WP Admin interface. To view this interface, click the View tab in the upper right corner and select Classic view.

Categories and tags help you sort your blog posts and make it easier for users to find what they are looking for. However, they’re only available for posts by default, not for pages.

Why Add Categories and Tags to WordPress Pages?

Categories and tags are default WordPress taxonomies for your blog posts. Categories are a broad grouping of content, while tags help describe specific details of your content. You can read more about the difference in our guide to categories vs tags.

By default, both categories and tags are only limited to blog posts in WordPress.

When you create a new page, you will notice that there is no option to add categories or tags to your WordPress page.

However, you may want to add categories and tags to your WordPress pages. It can help you to organize and sort your content if you have a lot of pages. It can also improve your site navigation and help your visitors to find related pages on your WordPress website more easily.

If you have multiple sales pages for different products in your online store, for example, then you can group them under broad categories.

You can do the same for different feature pages for your apps and software. For example, OptinMonster groups multiple feature pages under the ‘Features’ category.

Adding Categories and Tags to WordPress Pages

The easiest way of setting up categories and tags for your WordPress pages is by using the Pages with category and tag plugin. It’s a free WordPress plugin and works out of the box with no need for additional configuration.

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the plugin. For more details, please see our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Once activated, go to Pages » Add New and you will find post categories and tags now available for your WordPress pages.

Next, you can create categories and tags for your pages.

To add a category, head over Pages » Categories from your WordPress dashboard and then enter a ‘Name’ and ‘Slug’ for your category.

After that, you can scroll down and select a ‘Parent Category’ for your category.

Once you’ve entered these details, simply click the ‘Add New Category’ button.

You can then view your newly added category for your pages.

If you want to delete a category, then simply click the checkbox next to it and select ‘Delete’ from the Bulk Action dropdown and click the ‘Apply’ button.

Next, you can assign your WordPress pages to the categories you just created.

To start, simply edit or create a new page. From the WordPress content editor, you can now select the relevant category from the menu on your right. For instance, we created a feature page and marked it under the Features category.

Similarly, you can add tags for your WordPress page under the ‘Tags’ field. If you want to add multiple tags, then simply separate them using a comma.

For example, you can add keywords and phrases that help describe your content. In our case, we added the terms ‘exit intent’ and ‘OptinMonster’ as tags.

After selecting your category and adding tags, simply update or publish your WordPress page.

Since posts are listed with the newest posts at the top, your posts are meant to be timely. Your older posts are archived based on month and year.

As the posts get older, your visitors will have to dig deeper to find them. You have the option to organize your posts based on categories and tags.

Blog posts also encourage conversation. They have a built-in comment feature that allows users to comment on a particular topic. By default, comments, pingbacks, and trackbacks are enabled.

After the main article content, there’s the comments section. Usually, comments will be disabled on your WordPress pages. 

You can go to Settings » Discussion to turn off comments on older posts if you like.

WordPress posts also display post metadata. This is the information listed after the blog post title on individual posts and your blog page.

What are Pages in WordPress?

Pages are static “one-off” type content like your about page, privacy policy, contact page, and more. While the WordPress database stores the published date of the page, pages are timeless entities.

For example, your about page is not supposed to expire. Sure, you can go back and make updates to it, but chances are you will not have about page 2012, about page 2013, etc.

You can add and edit pages in your WordPress admin panel by clicking on the ‘Pages’ menu option.

The differences listed above may have exceptions. You can use WordPress add-ons to extend the functionality of both content types.

Despite these differences, there are some similarities between pages and posts in WordPress.

First, both are used to post content. It can add text, images, videos, forms and more to posts and pages. Featured images are supported both on pages and in posts.
