How to fix/remove fatal error during software installation

Problem

You are unable to deploy software and you get an error: Fatal error during the installation process.

Why does this error occur?

You will encounter this error for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. Previous existence of the software.
  2. Whether software-related processes, files, or browsers on the client device are active during deployment.
  3. The username mentioned in the “Run as” option in Set Configuration does not have privileges to install the software.
  4. Generic machine-specific problems:
    • There is not enough disk space for the installation.
    • The temporary directory is not clean.
    • A certain file on the machine is locked.
  5. Common Windows Installer issues:
    • Unable to access Windows Installer service
    • The Windows Installer service could not be started
    • Unable to start Windows Installer service on local computer
  6. Application specific errors

To resolve a fatal error during software installation, follow the steps below:

Remove files from previous installations

Use Microsoft’s Windows Installer Cleanup utility to remove traces of previous installations. This utility does not remove files installed by the installer, which may need to be removed manually. For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, Description of the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

Make sure the user account has administrative privileges to install the software

If you are running your installation on a Windows machine, you are probably the administrator of your computer. Follow these steps to confirm administrative rights on your computer:

  1. Select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management .
  2. In the Computer Management dialog box, click System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users.
  3. Right-click on your username and select Properties .
  4. In the properties dialog, select the Member of tab and make sure it says “Administrator”.

If you are installing the application on a Windows 7 or Windows Vista computer, the user name specified in the Run as option must be the default administrator (the user name must be Administrator) and not another member of the Administrator group.

Troubleshoot machine-specific issues

To check the available space on your hard drive, follow the instructions below:

  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Select the drive where the software is installed.
  • Right-click the drive where the software is installed (usually this is the C: drive) and select Properties.
  • On the General tab, note the amount of free space.

If you are sure you have enough space to install the software on your computer, something else is causing the error.

To clean up the temporary directory, follow the instructions below:

To clean up your temporary directory, you must first determine its location on your hard drive. Delete the contents of the directory using an MS-DOS command or using Windows Explorer. To determine the location of the temporary directory:

For temporary user files:

  • Select Start > Run.
  • Type %temp% and press Enter. This will display a list of the contents of the user’s temporary folder.

For temporary system files:

  • Select Start > Run.
  • Tapez temp et appuyez sur Entrée. Cela listera le contenu du dossier temporaire du système.

Pour supprimer le contenu du répertoire Temp :

Choose one of the following methods to delete the contents of the Temp directory. Note: Do not delete the Temp directory itself. Delete only the files and folders in the directory as follows:

Using a MS-DOS command

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type deltree /y temp_directory_location\\*.*.

For example: deltree /y C:\\Windows\\Temp\\*.* temp_directory_location is the location of the Temp directory.

Using Windows Explorer

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop or select Start > Explore.
  2. Navigate to the location of the Temp directory, for example, C:\\Windows\Temp.
  3. Select Edit > Select All. Select File > Delete.
  4. Click Yes or Yes to All in the dialog that appears.

To unlock a certain file on the machine:

  1. Close all applications running in the background.
  2. Reboot your computer.
  3. Run the installation again.

Resolve Common Windows Installer issues

Refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base to resolve issues related to Windows Installer.

Make sure to kill the related processes.

The processes, files or browsers associated to the software can interrupt deployment if they are active. so, it is recommended to kill them manually before deployment or perform the deployment during system startup.

Resolve application-specific errors

These are MSI application specific errors. For example, some applications require a user profile to install. If you have not specified any user in Run As option, try installing the application as a different user.

Si aún no puede resolverlo, intente mejorar el registro para identificar el problema. I had issues with other full download and the web installer from time to time. Using the other one can help.

I.e. if the web install fails I use the full install.

Also ensure you are all up to date, had issues with certificates before and a update fixed this.

There are logs the installer creates may give you more info. Do a search to find out where.

Important

Having a problem installing? We can help. We offer an installation chat (English only) support option.

This troubleshooting guide includes step-by-step instructions that should resolve most installation issues.

Online installations

The following steps apply to a typical online installation. For an offline installation, see How to troubleshoot an offline installation.

Step 1 – Check whether the problem is a known issue

There are some known issues with the Visual Studio Installer that Microsoft is working on fixing. To see if there’s a workaround for your problem, check the Known Issues section of our release notes.

There are some known issues with the Visual Studio Installer that Microsoft is working on fixing. Check if your problem is already solved, or find workarounds, in the Known Issues section of our release notes.

Step 2 – Try repairing Visual Studio

Repair fixes many common update issues. For more about when and how to repair Visual Studio, see Repair Visual Studio.

Step 3 – Check with the developer community

Search for your error message in the Visual Studio Developer Community. Other members of the community might have found a solution or workaround to your problem.

Step 4 – Delete the Visual Studio Installer folder to fix upgrade problems

The Visual Studio bootstrapper is a light-weight executable that initiates the install of the Visual Studio Installer and then the Visual Studio product. Deleting the Visual Studio Installer files and then rerunning the bootstrapper solves some update failures.

Note

Performing the following actions reinstalls the Visual Studio Installer files and resets the installation metadata.

  1. Close the Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Delete the Visual Studio Installer installation directory. Typically, the directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer.
  3. Run the Visual Studio bootstrapper. You might find the bootstrapper in your Downloads folder with a file name that follows a vs_[Visual Studio edition]__*.exe pattern. If you don’t find that application, you can download the bootstrapper by going to the Visual Studio older downloads page and clicking Download for your edition of Visual Studio. Then, run the executable to reset your installation metadata.
  4. Try to install or update Visual Studio again. If the Installer continues to fail, proceed to the Report a problem step.
  1. Close the Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Delete the Visual Studio Installer folder. Typically, the folder path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer.
  3. Run the Visual Studio Installer bootstrapper. You might find the bootstrapper in your Downloads folder with a file name that matches a vs_[Visual Studio edition]__*.exe pattern. Or, you can download the bootstrapper for your edition of Visual Studio from the Visual Studio downloads page. Then, run the executable to reset your installation metadata.
  4. Try to install or update Visual Studio again. If the Visual Studio Installer continues to fail, proceed to the Report a problem step.

Step 5 – Report a problem

In some situations, such as when there are corrupted files, issues might require case-by-case troubleshooting. To help us help you, follow these steps:

  1. Collect your setup logs. See How to get the Visual Studio installation logs for details.
  2. Open the Visual Studio Installer, and then click Report a problem to open the Visual Studio Feedback tool. Screenshot showing the Provide Feedback button in the Visual Studio installer.
  3. Give your problem report a title, and provide relevant details. Click Next to go to the Attachments section, and then attach the generated log file (typically, the file is at %TEMP%\vslogs.zip).
  4. Click Next to review your problem report, and then click Submit.
  1. Collect your setup logs. See How to get the Visual Studio installation logs for details.
  2. Open the Visual Studio Installer, and then choose Report a problem to open the Visual Studio Feedback tool. Screenshot showing the Provide Feedback button in the Visual Studio installer.

  2. Run the Visual Studio installer bootstrapper again. You can find the bootstrapper in your Downloads folder vs_[Visual Studio edition]__*.exe with a filename that matches a pattern. You can also download the bootstrapper for your edition of Visual Studio from the Visual Studio Downloads page.
  3. Try reinstalling Visual Studio.

Step 7 – Contact us (optional)

If none of the above steps allowed you to successfully install or update Visual Studio, please contact us using our live chat support option (English only) for assistance. ‘assistance.

offline installations

Here are some known issues and workarounds that may help you when creating an offline install and installing from a local layout.

Theme The solution
Users cannot access files. Be sure to set the permissions (ACL) to grant read access to other users before sharing the installation offline.
Unable to install new workloads, components, or language packs Make sure you have Internet access if you are installing from a partial design and selecting any workloads, components, or languages that were not previously downloaded for that partial design.

To troubleshoot problems with a network installation, see Troubleshoot network-related errors when installing or using Visual Studio.

Admin Updates

Manager updates may not apply properly due to various situations. See Administrator Update Troubleshooting Error Codes for more information.

Installation logs

Installation logs help us troubleshoot most installation issues. When you submit a problem using Report a problem in Visual Studio Installer, the latest Visual Studio Installer configuration log is automatically added to your report.

If you contact Microsoft Support, you may be prompted to collect installation logs using the Microsoft Visual Studio and .NET Framework Log Collection Tool. The Log Collection Tool collects installation logs for all components installed by Visual Studio, including the .NET Framework, Windows SDK, and SQL Server. It also collects computer information, Windows Installer inventory, and Windows Event Log information for Visual Studio Installer, Windows Installer, and System Restore.

To collect logs:

  1. Download the tool.
  2. Open an administrative command prompt.
  3. Run Collect.exe in the folder where you saved the tool.
  4. The tool generates a vslogs.zip file in your %TEMP% folder, typically C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp\vslogs.zip.

Remark

The tool must be run under the same user account under which the installation failed. If you are running the tool from a different user account, set the –user:<name> option to specify the user account under which the installation failed. RunCollect.exe – ? from an administrator command prompt for additional options and usage information.

WebView2 installation issues

WebView2 is a component required by Visual Studio, but your organization’s group policies may block this component from being installed. Blocking the installation of WebView2 will prevent the installation of Visual Studio.

Two policies control the ability to install WebView2: Microsoft Edge ‘Install (WebView)’ and Microsoft Edge ‘InstallDefault’ .

• If the Microsoft Edge “Install (WebView)” policy is configured, it will determine whether WebView2 can be installed. • If the Microsoft Edge “Install (WebView)” policy is not configured, the Microsoft Edge “Install by default” policy will determine whether WebView2 can be installed.

Remark

If no policy is configured, installation of WebView2 is allowed by your organization.
