How to read a Tumblr in chronological order – a simple guide

As I pointed out, my blog frequently uses Tumblr’s continuous feature to post in chronological order.

Most blogs display the newest post first and the oldest post last, which can be quite problematic if your blog is in the form of a story, guide, comic or whatever needs to be read from the beginning.

In the poster in chronological order, the oldest post is posted first and the blog can be read page by page forward rather than back.

You will need to tag your posts. All those. Or at least the ones you want to include in the timeline playback. If there are irrelevant things getting in the way of a story, being able to exclude certain posts is a plus.

I chose “wtfih” for my tag, or at least for now.

There are things in the WTFIH tag that I find relevant to my live blog. Anything important or relevant, I tag it with “wtfih”. Anything I prefer to leave out, I don’t mark.

Normally, when searching via a tag, the URL would be *your URL*[dot]tumblr[dot]com/tagged/*tag*

For my blog, it would be

As you can see, the most recent message is displayed first.

This is not the way to read my blog! It is made to be read from the beginning.

To do this, I simply change the URL a bit.

Simply by attaching /chrono to a tag’s URL, the tag enters after that start.

*your URL*[dot]tumblr[dot]com/tagged/*tag*/chrono

In my experience, I thought the tag cut around just over 390 posts, or 26 pages in my case, because I have 15 posts per page.

For this reason, I aimed the tag in several parts.

Once you think you’ve reached the limit or when you just want to better organize the sections, give the tag a name. He keeps things simple and easy.

The difference for me is wtfih and wtfih2.

Keep adding numbers or uses of different labels as you like them.

Any label can be viewed in chronological order with this method. If you’re an art tag, just add /chrono to the end of your tag and I’ll comment on it.

If you once posted these posts or had a lot of posts to edit, you can use the bulk post editor to add tags for up to 100 posts at a time.

Comment found by group post editor:

You will come to a page that looks like this:

From here you can make your blog posts and select the posts you added to the tags.

You can bookmark a tag page by following it, making it easier to go back to it later. Following a tag will also inject some posts from that tag into your dashboard, but you can disable this with the Include followed tag posts toggle in your dashboard settings.

There are a few ways to get to a tag page:

  • Click the tag on your dashboard.
  • Add the tag name to the end of in your browser’s address bar.
  • Start typing the tag, and click the suggestion Go to #___.

Tumblr's main search bar with the word dogs being typed. Drop-down suggestions show #dogs, which is highlighted.

In-blog Tag Pages

Clicking (or tapping) a tag on your own blog will lead you to your in-blog tag page for that tag.

You can also link to the posts with a tag, by adding /tagged/tag to your blog’s URL. For example:

These links will only show the 200 most recent posts with that tag in reverse chronological order (latest posts on top).

To display posts in chronological order (older posts on top), add /chrono to the end of the tag URL (i.e.

Some themes won’t show tags, but they will still appear in the dashboard and be searchable across Tumblr (unless you’ve hidden it from search results).

Tags in URLs

For some characters to work properly in URLs, they need special handling. For example, if your tag has multiple words, your links should have %20 instead of the space. If your tag has a + sign, you’ll need to use %2B instead. Here are some examples of what these would look like:

Your tag How the URL will look
tumblr tuesday

For this reason, in October 2021, we’ve announced a new toggle to substantially improve the accuracy of those results. If you’re having trouble with your URLs not working properly, try toggling the Use better tagged and search URL decoding option from your blog customize menu (remember to hit Save after toggling it on):

A sidebar parameter /customize. Text reads URL handling, uses better tag and search URL decoding, with toggle animation enabled.

Using that toggle does not require changes to the tags on your posts (past or future ones). It will only change the URLs of your tag pages, so keep this in mind if you have a master list of your blog’s tag pages.

You can create link pages to link to posts with specific tags in your blog.

The image shows the header from One of the links, Features, is highlighted. The URL of this link ends with /tagged/features

  1. Click Add page at the bottom of the sidebar in the Pages section of your blog ‘s customization menu .
  2. Select Link from the drop-down menu, plus note that to prevent spam and if your account is new, you won’t see this option . This feature will be revealed to you after performing a few actions such as customizing your blog and liking posts.
  3. In the Link to field , create the URL for the specific tagged articles you want to link to. Add /tagged/mytag to the end of your blog URL, to replace mytag with the tag you will use next. For tags with multiple words, use %20 between each word (e.g. /tagged/bubble%20tea).
  4. Choose a name for your new page in the Page Title field .
  5. Click Save.
