Overview

This article describes an issue where the Code42 application displays the message “Unable to connect to backup engine” if the localhost entries in your computer’s hosts file do not point to the default loopback IP addresses. The Code42 application cannot connect to the Code42 service if the localhost entries in its hosts file have changed.

To troubleshoot other causes of the “Unable to connect to backup engine” message, see Unable to connect to background service.

Diagnostic

A modified localhost entry is likely the cause of this problem if all of these conditions are true:

  • The Code42 application displays the message “Failed to connect to the backup engine”.
  • The service.log of the Code42 application contains the message:

CPService is already running on localhost:4243

This message indicates that the Code42 application cannot connect to the Code42 service.

  • Your hosts file has been modified, either manually or by another application.

Recommended Solution

Be careful when following the steps below. Editing the hosts file should only be done by advanced users. If you have any concerns about this process, please contact our Customer Champions. Some versions of Windows also provide automated tools to restore default values in your hosts file. See External Resources below for more details.

Back up your hosts file before making changes Before you follow the steps below to modify your hosts file, make a backup copy of the file so that you can easily undo your changes if they have unintended consequences. Also, adding a # to the beginning of any line tells the OS to ignore that line, but preserves the contents as a “comment” that you can refer to later. Saving original content as comments is useful if you need to roll back changes later.

the Windows

  1. Open the Windows Start menu and search for Notepad .
  2. Right-click on Notepad and select Start as administrator .
  3. Select File > Open and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\host . The hosts file opens.
  4. Edit or remove the localhost entries so that only the following localhost addresses remain. DO NOT modify the other entries in the file. 127.0.0.1 localhost::1 localhost
  5. Save the file.
  6. Start the Code42 service.

mac

  5. Press Ctrl+X to exit.

  6. Press Y to confirm changes.

  7. Press Enter to save to the existing location.

  8. Start the Code42 service.
