Before you start

Here are a few things to keep in mind before starting the domain transfer process:

  • Transferring a domain does not change the content or design of your site. If you want to set up your site before transferring the domain, import your site content first.
  • Newly registered domains cannot be transferred until they are at least 60 days old .
  • Domain transfers can take five to seven days . If you need your domain to start showing your site sooner, change the nameservers before you start the transfer.
  • Our annual plans come with free domain name credit for one year, which can be used to transfer your domain.
  • As part of the transfer process, your domain will be renewed for an additional year . If you just renewed the domain with your current provider, you won’t lose that renewal. If your domain has already been renewed for the maximum possible term (ten years for most domains, although less for some country code domain extensions), it will not be possible to transfer it until the domain is up to date. again eligible for renewal.
  • Once the transfer is complete, you’ll manage all aspects of your domain in your account, including renewal, cancellation, or future transfer.

Prepare a domain for transfer

Before you can start transferring your domain, you’ll need to complete two steps with your current provider. General steps are explained below, or you can skip to instructions for common domain providers like GoDaddy and 1&1:

Instructions for common suppliers

Step 1: Unlock your domain

Domain providers lock a domain as a security measure to prevent unauthorized changes, such as transfers. This is often called a recorder lock.

Your domain provider’s domain management interface should allow you to remove this lock. Some domain providers require you to contact them through their customer service to request deletion.

Step 2 – Obtain your domain transfer authorization code

You will need to provide with a unique code from your current domain provider which will allow you to transfer the domain here. This code is commonly referred to as an EPP code , but your domain provider may also refer to it as a transfer code, authorization key, or authentication code.

Your domain provider’s interface should allow you to request this code, but some domain providers require you to contact them through their customer service to request the code.

Please Note : Some registrars may have additional steps that must be completed before a domain can be transferred.

Start the Transfer on

To ensure your domain will work immediately upon a completed transfer, update the name servers with your current registrar to point to before you initiate the transfer.

Once you have unlocked your domain and obtained your transfer code (see previous section), you can now follow these steps to start the transfer on

  1. Go to the Domains page by clicking Upgrades Domains in the left sidebar of your site dashboard.
  2. Next, decide which site you wish to transfer your domain to:
    • To add a domain to the existing site you’re working on, click Add a domain to this site.
    • To add a domain to a brand new site, click Other domain options, then select Add a domain to a new site.
    • To add a domain to another site in your account, click Other domain options, then select Add a domain to a different site.

add domain options

  1. Select Use a domain I own.
  1. On the next page, click the button that says Transfer to

by selecting "upload to"

  1. Type the domain name you wish to transfer and click Next.

  1. The next page will ask you to confirm that you want to begin setting up the domain transfer. If you want to proceed, click the Start setup button.

  1. On the next page, you’ll be instructed to log into your domain provider account and locate your domain’s settings page. Once you’ve done this, click the I found the domain’s settings page button.

  1. The next page will check that your domain is unlocked. If your domain is still locked, please make sure to unlock it with your current provider and then click the I’ve unlocked my domain button. It might take some time for any changes at your current provider to take effect.

If your domain is still locked by your domain provider, or if the domain’s lock status hasn’t updated yet, you may see an error message, and a suggestion to try again in a few minutes.

  1. Enter the authorization code you’ve received from your current provider and click the Check readiness for transfer button.

  1. When the authorization code is confirmed, click the Continue button.
  2. The last step before checkout is to confirm your contact details. If you’ve previously bought a domain or a plan from us, we will pre-fill the form for you. You can also enable private registration if it’s available for your domain. If all your details are correct, click Continue to Checkout to pay for your domain transfer.
  3. Make a payment to purchase the transfer. If you are entitled to a free domain with any annual or two-year plan, you will not be charged.
  4. On the next screen, you will see a confirmation message. You will also receive an email from Your domain transfer is now in progress and should complete in five to seven days.

Your domain will be renewed automatically for another year upon completion of a successful transfer. You can add as many additional domains to the same site as you like, but you will need to pay for additional transfers separately. The cost of the transfer is equal to the standard renewal cost for the domain. If you do not complete the transfer within 30 days, the domain transfer will be removed from your account and your payment refunded or your free domain credit restored.

Do not cancel your domain registration at your current provider at this point. If you cancel the domain you will immediately stop owning it and the transfer will fail. Your current provider will automatically remove the domain from their system once the transfer completes.

Changing the DNS Records After a Successful Transfer

Once you confirm the transfer, it can take up to seven days for the process to complete. You will receive an email from us once the domain is on our system, at which point you will be able to manage it from Upgrades Domains.

If your domain’s name servers are not pointed to us yet, you can now set them to point to us by going to Upgrades Domains and clicking on your domain. Choose Change your name servers & DNS records and on the next screen turn on the “Use Name Servers” option as shown here:

Use WordPress nameservers

If you have an email address for your domain with another provider, you can add DNS records required to connect an email account to your domain.

Once the transfer completes you may also receive an email requesting you to verify your contact information for the domain. That email will be coming from [email protected]

Checking Your Transfer Status and Failed Transfers

If the domain transfer fails, we’ll notify you via email, and will also display a notice at Upgrades Domains that the transfer failed. You’ll have the option to restart the transfer, or to cancel it for a refund.

If the failed transfer isn’t restarted within 30 days of the original purchase, it will automatically be removed from your account and your payment refunded or your plan domain credit restored.

Domain transfer statuses include:

Transfer Waiting

transfer status example

  • This means you purchased a domain transfer during checkout, but have not begun the transfer process.
  • Select More Info for more information on your next steps.
  • Go to Upgrades Domains and select Start Transfer to begin the transfer process.
  • If you don’t start the transfer within 25 days, the transfer will be removed from your account and your payment refunded or your plan domain credit restored.
Transfer in Progress

transfer in progress status example

  • This is the state of the transfer once you’ve submitted the authorization code and paid for the transfer.
  • Your domain will be locked for any changes at your current provider, so you will no longer be able to make changes to the name servers, DNS records, or contact information.
  • You should also receive an email from your current provider with instructions how to cancel the transfer on their end. This is a security precaution against unauthorized transfers, and you can safely ignore that email if you want the transfer to proceed.
  • No further action is needed, and the transfer will complete within five to seven days.
Transfer Failed

transfer failure example

  • This status is shown if the transfer could not be completed.
  • You will also receive an email notifying you of the failed transfer.
  • Click on the More Info notice to see some more information on why the transfer failed.

Reasons a domain transfer may fail include:

  • You bought a transfer while signing up for a new site, but did not complete the steps to start the transfer within 30 days.
  • The domain is still locked. Please make sure you’ve unlocked the domain for transfer at your current provider.
  • The domain expired, entered redemption, or was canceled after the transfer was initiated. Please contact your current provider to help you reactivate the domain, and then restart the transfer process.
  • The transfer was canceled on your current provider’s end. Please restart the transfer process.
  • In rare cases, the current provider may dispute a transfer which will cause it to be canceled.

If we’re unable to determine why the transfer failed on our end, we may need to refer you back to your current domain provider so they can look into it.

Canceling a Transfer

If you decide you don’t want to transfer the domain to us anymore, you can cancel it from the Domains page (Upgrades → Domains). Click on the domain that is pending transfer, and select the Cancel Transfer option, as shown below:

cancel domain transfer

This will take you to the Purchases page where you can remove the purchase from your site. If you used the free domain in your plan, canceling this should also restore the free domain credit so you can use it for a different domain. If you paid for the transfer, this will issue a refund.

You will also be able to cancel the transfer via the confirmation email your current provider sends you, or via your current provider’s domain management interface, though doing this will not remove the upgrade from your account. Instead, you will receive an email from us that the transfer failed, and you can then cancel it via Upgrades → Purchases to receive your refund.

Once you submit the authorization code and start the transfer, you will no longer be able to cancel it from Upgrades → Domains. You may still be able to cancel it via your current provider.

Which TLDs (Extensions) Can I Transfer to

We support new registrations and incoming transfers for most of the extensions listed here. If the extension is not on this list, you will not be able to transfer it to but you can still connect it to your through another process called domain connection.

In addition, there are a few exceptions. Although the following extensions can be registered here, they cannot be transferred to at this time:

  • .ca
  • .fr
  • .uk (including
  • .jp

If you want to use a domain here that is not on our list of supported extensions, or if you have one of the above domains already registered elsewhere and want to use it with, you can connect it instead.

FAQ and Troubleshooting

Can I speed up the amount of time a transfer takes?

In some cases, you can reach out to the registrar you are moving away from and ask them to expedite the transfer process.

My authorization code isn’t valid.

Authorization or EPP codes are case sensitive. If you are typing the code manually, try copy and pasting the code instead. Make sure no additional spaces are being added.

The domain transfer is completed, but my domain isn’t working.

Check your DNS settings to make sure you are using name servers. Go to Upgrades → Domains, select the domain you want, and click on Change your name servers & DNS records. Make sure Use Name Servers is turned on. Also, make sure your transferred in domain is set to primary. You can do this by going to Upgrades → Domains, clicking the three dots next to the domain you want as primary, and selecting Make primary site address.

I changed my privacy settings and I still don’t see my site in Google. Why?

It can take 4-6 weeks or more for search engines to revisit your site and discover new content. Adding your site to Google Search Console and requesting an update can help speed up discovery. What about my pages, posts and other content?

A domain transfer does not transfer a site’s content (pages, posts, media, etc.). If you want to transfer content from a site to, use imports.

Domain Connection Overview

Domain connection (also known as domain mapping) means that instead of your site address being a subdomain (like, you can make your site’s address something like without the WordPress name in the address.

Connecting a domain to your site means:

  • You continue to manage the domain name renewal through the company you purchased it from, also known as your domain registrar.
  • Your domain will use specific DNS records (described in this guide) to display the website you built on
  • Suppose you have an existing custom email service through your domain registrar or another company. In that case, you will want to set up additional DNS records on to continue using that email service.
  • The domain connection feature is free with any paid plan.

If you would like to manage your site and domain all in one place, you can follow the steps to transfer the domain registration instead of connecting.

Change Your Domain’s Name Servers

If you already have a custom email with your domain, add the necessary DNS records from your mail provider to the DNS in before changing the name servers.

Name servers tell the domain where to look to display the website’s content. Without getting too complicated, name servers are DNS records that need to be changed with your registrar (where you registered your domain) to point to

You have two options for updating your name servers to point to your site.

Option 1: Update Name Servers Yourself

You can log into your account at your domain registrar and replace any existing domain name server (DNS) addresses with the name servers for These are:

Remember to remove your old name servers when adding the name servers.

You can find your domain provider in this list of common providers for further instructions.

Option 2: Contact Your Domain Registrar

Vous pouvez contacter le service d’assistance de votre bureau d’enregistrement de domaine pour effectuer les modifications DNS ou vous aider à les effectuer. Voici un exemple d’e-mail que vous pouvez leur envoyer :

Alternatives to Using Name Servers

While we strongly recommend using name servers to connect your domain name to, there are alternative ways to connect your existing domain to

If Your Domain is Registered Through GoDaddy or 1&1

If your domain is registered with GoDaddy or 1&1, you may see an option to Connect Your Domain which can configure the DNS changes.

  1. Go to Upgrades → Domains. Choose the domain you connected.
  2. Click on Connect Your Domain.

Si votre domaine est attribué par des bureaux d'enregistrement spécifiques, il y a un onglet Connecter votre domaine dans la section Gérer les domaines de la liste des options.

  1. Next, click the Configure Your Domain Settings button.
  2. Log into your account at your domain registrar (or DNS provider) when you see the prompt.
  3. Confirm that you want to set your domain to point to
  4. This will create the necessary DNS changes at your registrar/DNS provider to use your domain here.
Connect with A Records

We strongly recommend that you use name servers to point to In some cases, the domain registrar will only accept IP addresses. In those cases, you can find the IP addresses (A records) with the following steps:

  1. Go to Upgrades → Domains.
  2. Click the connected domain and look for “complete setup” or “review setup instructions.”

Une flèche pointant vers le lien hypertexte dans le texte sous le domaine pour "Instructions de configuration"

  1. Click Advanced Setup as seen in the following screenshot:

Sur l'écran des paramètres suggérés, une flèche pointe vers le texte en bas qui renvoie aux paramètres avancés.

  1. Click Start Setup.
  2. You will be asked to log into your domain provider on the next screen.
    • On your domain’s provider site, go to the domain’s management settings.
    • If you are unsure how to find this section, we suggest contacting your domain provider’s customer support.
  3. Click the button I found the domain’s settings page to see the records for your site.

L'écran de connexion au domaine pour les paramètres avancés avec des instructions sur la façon de localiser votre fournisseur de domaine.

  1. We provide records you’ll want to add to your domain’s DNS on the next screen.
    • There will be two A Records (IP Addresses); you will replace your existing root A records with the ones we provide.
    • There will be one CNAME record you will replace or add to make sure the www part of your site address correctly redirects to your site.
  2. Once you have made these changes, click Verify Connection.

Bear in mind, IP addresses can change without notice, which is why name servers is the preferred method.

After Changing Name Servers

  • The domain might not load right away. It can take up to 72 hours for the DNS to update across global servers and internet service providers. You may also need to clear your browser’s cache.
  • Once you confirm that your site loads when visiting your domain, you can follow a few steps to set the primary domain.
  • Important: If you had other services connected to your domain, such as email or subdomains, you might have to add the necessary DNS records to your DNS records.
  • If you decide you no longer want to point your domain to, you can log into your registrar/DNS provider to remove the DNS records and point the domain elsewhere.

↑ Índice ↑

Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs)

Your domain name is an IDN if it contains language-specific characters such as ä, û, ע, ж, 字, मा. Domain registration, transfers-in, and connecting for IDNs, also known as Internationalized Domain Names, are not currently supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting Tips:

I changed name servers, but my domain isn’t loading or pointing to my site.

  • Name server changes can take up to 72 hours to fully propagate, during which time the domain might not load properly.
  • Try clearing your browser’s cache to ensure your browser is loading the most up-to-date information.
  • Contact your domain registrar to ensure the name servers were correctly changed (and the old ones were removed entirely).

Can I connect a domain to a specific page on my site?

Les domaines ne peuvent pas être connectés à des répertoires ou des pages spécifiques de votre site, par exemple,

Puis-je avoir « www » avant mon nom de domaine ?

Visitors can still access your site on “www”, but they will still be redirected to the non-www version. Search engines prefer a version of the site address defined as a canonical URL for SEO reasons. Otherwise, they will see duplicate content. Therefore, chose the non-www version of your site as the canonical URL.

  3. How to Request a Domain Transfer to ChemiCloud

This tutorial will cover how to transfer a domain from to a different domain provider.

Things to Consider Before Transferring Your Domain Away from

  1. Before going further with the domain transfer, it is essential to know that when a domain name is transferred away, the name servers associated with your domain stay the same during the transfer from one registrar to the other. So, for example, if your domain name is using the default name servers of, those name servers will be preserved during the transfer, and you won’t be able to change the name servers until the transfer is complete. If you switched to another web-hosting provider and your website was migrated already, before initiating a domain transfer, make sure that your domain name is pointed to the new provider’s name servers. As we previously mentioned – you won’t be able to change the name servers until the transfer is complete.
  2. Domain Name Registrations and Web Hosting are separate services. The domain name transfer process will not automatically migrate your website. If you are a ChemiCloud customer and you wish to transfer your website from, please submit a migration request from your client area. Our migrations experts will move your existing sites and emails free of charge, seamlessly, and with no downtime.
  3. The transfer of your domain name will include your domain renewal with another year. So, if your domain is due to expire on the 1st of January 2025, once the transfer is complete, the new expiration date will be the 1st of January 2026.
  4. Ensure that the domain has not been registered or transferred in the last 60 days.
  5. Ensure that the domain is in the  ‘Active Period’ and not in the ‘Redemption Grace Period’ or ‘Pending Delete’ period.
