.htaccess (hypertext access) is a hidden file used to configure additional functionality for websites hosted on Apache Web Server. With it, you can rewrite the URL, password protect directories, enable direct link protection, disallow access to specific IP addresses, change your website’s time zone, or change the index page default, and more. How to locate an open .htaccess file?

We’ll show you how to locate and open . htaccess in hPanel and cPanel of Hostinger.

hPanel

Finding and editing the file in Hostinger’s hPanel only takes a few clicks. Here’s how:

  1. Once you are logged in to your WordPress dashboard, use the search function to find the file manager located in the Files category .

How to Create .htaccess File?

If .htaccess file is not present, here’s how you create one. This method is applicable to both hPanel and cPanel:

  1. Click the New File button in the upper menu.
  2. By default, when you use the File Manager in cPanel, it doesn’t show hidden files. Hidden files are any file that begins with a dot, such as .htaccess. .htaccess is a common file to edit, so to edit the file using your File Manager, you’ll need to have the option selected to show hidden files. Keep reading to learn how.

Showing hidden files in File Manager

  1. Log in to your cPanel

Accessing the File Manager

Note: Legacy accounts will feature a horizontal navigation bar at the top of the screen, while Bluerock account users will see a vertical navigation menu on the left-hand side of the screen.   4. The file manager will now load in a new window and display your files. Double-click a folder to open it, then click Up One Level to return to a folder. 

No pop-up box?  You may have selected the “Ignore this question and always open this directory in the future when opening the file manager” option. To make the pop-up window reappear, simply click on  Reset All  Interface Settings at the very bottom of your Control Panel.
