    Hi guys,

I have a problem that I can’t solve. Sorry if I’m confusing anyone..

Let me rewind a few months back, a few users asked why we couldn’t access coupons.com (I know it’s not work related, but it’s a small thing). When I checked, I got the internal error* “Error: Missing pattern ERR_CONNECT_FAIL”* So I checked with coupons.com, and they said we weren’t blocked or anything, so I tried for several weeks to see if I could get in. , I never could.. Today I try and I can.

Now for my current problem… We have a working software vendor (which I don’t trust, but got too big, and I have nothing to say, and you can rant about them )) but anyway they asked to set up a subdomain, which I did, and opened it in the firewall (Cisco-Meraki). Internal access via internal IP or fqdn (10.0.xx/name.domain.local) works fine. When I access outside the site or on my mobile phone, it works. When I try to connect to the site, the error * “Internal error: model missing ERR_CONNECT_FAIL” * appears again.

I don’t know where to start… does anyone know why I’m getting this error? Please let me know if anyone needs more info. I am trying to access sync. holdings com (no space and no site hieholdings .com ..

It is my understanding that that error is generated by your own browser. So the browser tells us that there is an error and the connection failed. Now why the error is a missing template, that has me stumped. I could be wrong here, I’ve been looking for it and wow, there’s very little to go on.

The things that seem to be the culprit, or the most likely culprit, are…

    • A firewall that blocks something that the site uses.
    • An AV package trashing the site.
    • A proxy server interfering with the site.

-Firewall, we don’t block anything (not even porn).. most of its default settings. since I cant get a real AUP approved. I will double check. Only know malware sites are blocked and other small thjings, but i usually get a different message.. I will try remove any blocking to see if that helps -AV, we have none.. Do you have a Proxy server, UTM, Content Filter, Firewall etc?

Fiddler can help you figure out more of what’s going on: http://www.telerik.com/fiddler

    using Cisco-Meraki MX80,

for Content filtering, only things blocked are “Confirmed SPAM sources”, “Malware Sites”, “Spam URLs”. and “Spyware and Adware”

for security filtering, Malware and Intrusion detection and prevention powered by Sourcefire are enabled. I just disabled them to see if that is the problem,

I have malwarebytes and free av on my machine (shhh.. dont tell anyone). lol I will run scans again, but I tried to have other people access site and same thing.. Also when it was coupons.com having the problem, it was all machines I tried on, but now it works.. and I never change anything.. so I am more confused.

hence why i said “shhh..dont tell anyone”.. I am very well aware of that.. dont even get me started on that part.. put it this way, that is only 1 of the reasons I am done with this place and am currently looking for a new job and may possibly move to mainland. The point of the comment is that it IS considered spam and Malware by many and your Meraki is very likely blocking it.

Turn off the filtering on the Meraki to prove it.

Is completely contradicted by this statement. @smartkid808 said:

for Content filtering, only things blocked are “Confirmed SPAM sources”, “Malware Sites”, “Spam URLs”. and “Spyware and Adware” for security filtering, Malware and Intrusion detection and prevention powered by Sourcefire are enabled. I just disabled them to see if that is the problem,

That second statement means you ARE using the Meraki as a passthrough proxy. And additionally you ARE blocking things, which contradicts the fact that you said nothing was blocked.

This seems to be Meraki-related to me. I registered simply to respond and get feedback. We occasionally have this issue and we use Cisco-Meraki devices. we are able to connect to seemingly-random site using a phone with 4g, but get this error as soon as we get on the LAN.

So far I am in the process of disabling everything (filtering, scanning, IDS, etc) to try to track this down. If you notice a solution feel free to post back (I will be calling Meraki if I cannot get a solution).

Are you by chance running SBS2008?

There’s no known issues with the Meraki’s that cause that but, I guess it could in some rare setups.

You might try running fiddler when you are getting the errors and see what kind of actual traffic is going on and look into the packets more. http://www.telerik.com/fiddler

Installed, and here is the error I receive:

[Fiddler] The connection to ‘mailchimp.com’ failed. Error: TimedOut (0x274c). System.Net.Sockets.SocketException A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 205.201.132.123:80

I should note that restarting my maraki MX80 solves the issue for about 5 minutes, which is when this error begins happening again.

Sounds like the firewall is either dropping packets or your Internet Modem/Media Converter. You might want to contact Cisco/Meraki.

I found this thread by google and I think it needs an update. If you are doing a site to site VPN on over non-Meraki VPN peers or Meraki to Meraki across two organisations because the self config does not work you will get the Missing Template ERR_CONNECT_FAIL if you have under,

Security appliance/ Content filtering – Web search filtering enabled. Disabling this option will re enable port 80 over the VPN.

This seems to only apply to Organization-wide settings and not Meraki Site-to-site VPN on the VPN side. It has also been reported on rear occasions to apply to outside DNS.

I had this same issue today. I took a new Meraki MX64 home with me to connect it back to our HQ’s ASA 5510 on a site-to-site VPN. Connecting the two was pretty easy, but once the tunnel was up, I ran into the Missing Template error when trying to connect to our corporate intranet site from behind the MX64.

The fix mentioned above worked for me as well (disable Web Search Filtering). Thanks for posting the fix here.

I’m trying to get my Node server up and running on Ubuntu 14.04. I followed a tutorial from DigitalOcean to set up nginx and server blocks to serve my content.

I have the server setup correctly, I believe because I can whois my-site.com and also ping my-site.com. when I visit the web address in the browser, however I get just this error that displays in the page: “Internal Error: Missing Template ERR_CONNECT_FAIL”.

I thought that maybe I pointed the nginx server block to the incorrect path, because of of the “Missing Template”, but it points to the right file. It is supposed to display a simple index.html file located in /var/www/my-site.com/html.

Here is my server block if this sheds some light on the error:

server { listen 80 default_server; listen [::]:80 default_server ipv6only=off; root /var/www/my-site.com/html; index index.html index.htm; # Make the site accessible from http://localhost/ server_name my-site.com www.my-site.com; location / { # First attempt to serve request as a file, # then as a directory, then back to showing a 404. try_files $uri $uri/ =404; # Uncomment to enable naxsi on this location # include /etc/nginx/naxsi.rules } }

This file is in /etc/nginx/sites-available/my-site.com and I also copied it to the sites-enabled directory.

What am I forgetting here?

This is a pretty standard error message, and in fact as of this moment nodejs.org is displaying that exact same message. I believe it is generated by a reverse proxy: for example, https://searchcode.com/?q=ERR_CONNECT_FAIL shows that ERR_CONNECT_FAIL appears in the squid reverse proxy software. I couldn’t find something similar a quick search through the nginx source code.

When I encountered this error message, I was deploying through the digitalocean one-click dokku app and I did not have a domain in /home/dokku/VHOST, so it was being assigned a random internal IP address. I accessed it using [domain]:[port]. Hope that gives you a clue.
