Detaining WordPress Comment Spam

Unfortunately, comment spam is a fact of life on the internet. If you enable comments on your website, you will have to deal with spammers. To prevent your site from making a poor first impression, you’ll need to find a way to stop comment spam in its tracks.

While you may never be able to eliminate spam entirely, you can do a lot to slow it down. For WordPress users, there are plenty of simple tweaks you can perform that will block or hide these comments before your visitors see them. You can even use a robust anti-spam plugin to tighten your defenses.

In this post, we’ll talk a little about what comment spam is and why it happens. Then we’ll show you six easy ways to stop comment spam on your WordPress site. Let’s take a look!

What comment spam is (and why it’s such a problem)

An example of spam comments in WordPress. An example of spam comments in WordPress.

Spam comments are often easily recognized by their generic content.

If you permit comments on your site, you’re bound to get some comment spam. As your site grows more popular, that spam is likely to become an even larger issue. There are many types of comment spam these days, but most of it is automated, posted by spam bots that use short, generic messages as a cover for including links.

Whatever form it takes, comment spam is a real problem because:

  • When your comment sections are filled up with spam messages, it’s harder for legitimate visitors to have conversations.
  • Leaving spam comments on your content makes your site look unprofessional.
  • A lot of these comments include malicious links, designed to trick visitors into giving away personal information.

Clearly, it’s vital to do everything you can to stop comment spam from appearing on your WordPress site. Fortunately, this isn’t difficult to do once you know the right techniques.

How to stop comment spam on your WordPress website (6 simple solutions)

The following six solutions are all smart ways to stop comment spam on your website. You can try all of these methods, or pick and choose the ones that are most relevant to your needs.

1. Reduce the number of links allowed per post

As we mentioned earlier, most comment spam is designed to add links in your comment section and trick people into clicking on them. Therefore, one way to combat spam is to permit fewer links in your comments. Legitimate visitors will also be prevented from posting many links, but slowing down the spammers can be worth that potential inconvenience.

From your WordPress dashboard, you can navigate to Settings → Discussion to make this change. Look for the Comment Moderation section:

Change the number of links allowed per comment in WordPress. Changing the number of links allowed per comment in WordPress.

Here you can decide how many links will be permitted in a comment before it is flagged for moderation. You can even reduce the number to zero if you want to require moderation for any comment with links.

2. Create a list of ‘blacklisted’ words

Many spam comments contain a lot of recognizable keywords. This makes it easier to spot them and to stop them from appearing on your website. You can simply create a ‘blacklist’ of words, and your site will flag any comment containing one of them.

To do this, return to Settings → Discussion in your WordPress dashboard and find the Comment Blacklist section:

Create a WordPress Comment Blacklist and a Good Way to Stop Comment Spam Créer une liste noire de commentaires dans WordPress est un bon moyen d'arrêter le spam de commentaires

Here, you can enter your list of words. When any comment is posted that contains one of those words, it will be sent straight to the trash. Of course, it’s important to choose the words in your blacklist carefully, so you don’t delete comments by legitimate posters. For suggestions, you can check out the recommended comment blacklist for WordPress on GitHub.

The goal of most spammers is to post on as many pages and sites as possible. This means if you can make it more challenging for them to add their comments to your site, they may just move on to the next target.

You can achieve this by restricting comment privileges to people who have registered on your site. This puts an extra hurdle between spammers and your comment section. As a side benefit, it encourages visitors to sign up for an account or a membership.

This option is also available in the Settings → Discussion section in WordPress. You’ll find it under Other comment settings:

La section Autres configurations de commentaires sur WordPress. La section Autres paramètres de commentaire dans WordPress.

Simply check the box labeled Users must be registered and logged in to comment, and save your changes.

4. Configure un sistema de moderación de comentarios

In a nutshell, comment moderation is when you require some or all comments to be approved by a person before they are permitted to appear on your site. If you have the time and resources to spare, this can be a smart strategy.

In WordPress, you can enable a comment moderation system very easily. Simply go back to Settings → Discussion, and check out the Before a comment appears section:

Configuration d'un système de modération de commentaires sur WordPress. Mise en place d'un système de modération des commentaires dans WordPress.

By selecting Comment must be manually approved, any comments made on your site will be held as Pending until they are reviewed. You can then check out each one, and decide whether to let it through or trash it. You can find more advice on setting up a comment moderation system in the WordPress Codex.

5. Use an anti-spam plugin

Finally, we would be remiss not to mention anti-spam plugins. These tools can present a powerful way to stop comment spam and can take care of sorting the good comments from the bad for you.

Many WordPress installations come with Akismet bundled in, and for good reason:

Protection antispam de Akismet Akismet Spam Protection

Author(s): Automattic

Current Version: 5.0.1

Last Updated: September 28, 2022

akismet.5.0.1.zip

94%Ratings 5,000,000+Installs WP 5.0+Requires

This anti-spam plugin connects to a constantly updated database of spam, so it’s very proficient at recognizing which comments are trouble and filtering them out. It also enables you to see what comments have been flagged.

Akismet is a solid option for most users, but there are plenty of excellent alternatives. For example, Antispam Bee is a well-reviewed plugin with a lot of customizable settings and features. Whatever plugin you choose, you’ll be taking an important step to stop comment spam on your website.

This method won’t work for all sites, but some third-party comment systems, like Disqus, can help eliminate most of the spam for you. Disqus is actually what we use here at Themeisle (you can scroll down and leave a comment on this post to see it in action!). Another option is to use Facebook comments on your site.

If you’re interested either of these options, check out our post on WordPress comment plugins.

Conclusion

Spam comments can quickly clutter up your site, making it look unprofessional and driving real visitors away. Cleaning up all that spam after the fact is challenging. This means you should strongly consider putting a little upfront time into developing a strong anti-spam strategy.

To stop comment spam on your WordPress site, you can:

  1. Reduce the number of links allowed per post
  2. Create a list of ‘blacklisted’ words
  3. Set up a comment moderation system
  4. Restrict commenting privileges to registered users
  5. Use an anti-spam plugin, like Akismet.
  6. Switch to a third-party comment plugin.

Let’s take a look at each of these methods.

Spam comments? Never heard of them 😌…thanks to these plugins and features ❌Click to Tweet

1. Disable Comments Completely

The first option is to simply disable WordPress comments altogether. Maybe your business doesn’t use or want comments, so to protect yourself from unwanted comments, you can simply turn them off. One of the easiest ways to do this is to simply uncheck the Allow people to post comments on new posts option , which is found under Settings > Discussion .

To completely disable comments, go to the Default post settings section at the top of the chat settings screen and uncheck the options.

If anonymous comments are enabled, they will not be required. This instantly opens your site to lots of spam bots that constantly crawl through comment forms on websites.

To disable anonymous comments in WordPress, simply check the Comment author must fill in name and email option under Settings > Discussion .

Desactivar comentarios anónimosDisable anonymous comments

This will make it harder for bots to leave automated comments (which make up the vast majority of comment spam) – but not impossible. It could also discourage people from leaving malicious comments or trolling your site.

3. Enable comment moderation

The first is the ability to manually approve each comment. While this won’t reduce spam, it can be an effective way to ensure visitors to your site only see high-quality comments that you have approved.

The second is the comment moderation queue. For example, you can automatically hold a comment in moderation if it contains a certain number of links or more. You can also build up a list of words, names, URLs, IPs, etc. that are held for moderation as well.

Go to the Email me whenever and the Before a comment appears sections.

  • To moderate all comments, check Comment must be manually approved.
  • To moderate comments from new commenters, check Comment author must have a previously approved comment.
  • To receive an email when a comment is held for moderation (important so you can moderate it and approve or delete it quickly), check the option Email me whenever… A comment is held for moderation.

Habilitar la moderación de comentariosEnable comment moderation

4. Only allow comments from logged in users

If you want to further limit who can leave comments, you can choose to only allow comments from people who are logged in users of the site. You can do this if your site is a community of members and you want to encourage discussion within that community while excluding other commenters.

To do this, go to the Other comment settings section . Check the option Users must be registered and logged in to comment.

Allow comments from registered usersAllow comments from logged in users

You’ll also need to consider the settings for user registration – will you allow anyone to register or will there be a moderation process for that? You can access registration settings by going to Settings > General.

5. Create a List of Blacklisted Words

If you want to allow comments but don’t want comments on specific subjects, then you can set a list of blacklisted words. This will include words commonly used by spammers as well as words you don’t want appearing on your site where relevant, such as profanity.

If you don’t want your competitors’ products or websites mentioned or linked to, you could also include those (although beware of taking this too far).

To create a list of blacklisted words, navigate to the Comments Blacklist field and enter the blacklisted words or phrases, one per line. They don’t have to be limited to words: they can include email addresses, website URLs, IP addresses, or whatever you want to include.

Create comment blacklistCreate a comment blacklist

You can speed this up by using an existing list of words commonly used by spammers. It’s a good idea to check the list first as it may include words that you don’t want to ban. For example, one word in it is “handbag” – if you run an accessories store, that’s a word you won’t want to ban!

If you don’t want to ban comments containing these words entirely, but want to moderate them instead, then you just add the list to the Comment Moderation field instead. This way, any comments using those words will be held for moderation instead of being sent to spam. Or you could use a combination of the two, with some words in one field and some in the other.

Info

Kinsta customers can easily block undesired IPs directly in MyKinsta with just a few clicks.

6. Reduce or Ban Links in Comments

Spam comments often contain links because they’re posted with the purpose of driving traffic to the spammer’s website. You can ban comments with links entirely or reduce the number of links allowed in a comment.

In the Comment Moderation section , select the number of links a comment must have before it is held for moderation. To allow a link, use 2 , or to prevent comments with links, select 1 .

You can also select a higher number if you want to allow comments with multiple links.

Reduce comment linksCollapse comment links

Comments with more than the allowed number of links will be held for moderation by an administrator before they can be published.

7. Disable comments for individual posts

Post editing screen - DiscussionPost Edit Screen – Discussion

Save the changes made to the post by clicking the Update button and comments will no longer be displayed or enabled on this post.

Stop WordPress Comment Spam With a Plugin

If you want a more powerful way to stop WordPress comment spam, you can install plugins to handle it for you. This means you can keep comments enabled on your site, but prevent spam comments from being notified to you for moderation or published.

Here are some of the plugins you can use to stop WordPress comment spam.

Akismet

The Akismet plugin is included by default with every WordPress installation and is developed by the Automattic team. It analyzes data from millions of sites and communities in real time and protects your WordPress site from spam.

This is one of the best WordPress plugins out there, it’s completely free for personal use and starts at $5/month for commercial sites.

Akismet WordPress pluginPlugin WordPress Akismet

It currently has over 5 million active installs with a 5 out of 5 star rating. You can download Akismet from the WordPress repository or by searching for it in your WordPress dashboard under Plugins > Add New (although it should already be on your site unless it was deleted).

This plugin has a long history of creating spam rules and filters that do a great job of making sure you see the good comments and not the bad ones.

If you’re running a commercial site, you’ll need to pay for an Akismet license, but it’s free for hobby bloggers. It is extremely powerful and will ban over 99% of comment spam from your WordPress site.

Disable comments

Disable Comments pluginDisable comments plugin

Disable Comments is a free plugin that lets you globally disable comments for a post type. It’s useful if you want to disable comments on a WordPress site with existing content and you don’t want to manually go through it.

How to Remove Comment Author Link with a Plugin

You can add a snippet of code to your WordPress site to simply remove the WordPress author comment links.

We do this on the Kinsta blog and it helps improve the quality of comments. If visitors see that the author’s name on existing comments isn’t linked, then they might be discouraged from leaving a comment just for that reason. This means you are hopefully only getting comments from visitors who want to engage with your content.

To do this, you can write your own simple plugin.

/* Plugin Name: Remove Comment Author Links Plugin URI: https://kinsta.com Description: This plugin removes links to comment author websites, in order to reduce the impact of comment spam. Version: 1.0 Author: Rachel McCollin Author URI: https://rachelmccollin.com Text Domain: kinsta License: GPLv2 */ function kinsta_remove_comment_author_link( $return, $author, $comment_ID ) { return $author; } add_filter( ‘get_comment_author_link’, ‘kinsta_remove_comment_author_link’, 10, 3 ); function kinsta_remove_comment_author_url() { return false; } add_filter( ‘get_comment_author_url’, ‘kinsta_remove_comment_author_url’);

If you want, you can also completely remove the website input field in the comments. Just add this code to your plugin:

function remove_website_field($fields) { unset($fields[‘url’]); renvoie $champs ; } add_filter(‘comment_form_default_fields’, ‘remove_website_field’);

Save the plugin file and activate it in the Plugins screen of your admin screens.

This plugin may not work with some themes, depending on how comments are coded there. If your WordPress theme uses the standard comments form, this will work. If not, try checking your theme’s feedback form code to find the filter hook used.

If in doubt, use a third-party plugin instead. And don’t modify your theme files unless it’s a theme you developed yourself, or you’ll lose your changes the next time you update it (here’s our in-depth guide on creating child themes).

Other anti-spam plugins

Akismet is by far the most popular spam plugin (largely because it comes pre-installed in most WordPress installations), but that doesn’t mean it’s the only one. You might prefer to try one of these options instead:

Anti spam pluginPlugin anti-spam

Anti-spam has a free or paid version, with the premium plugin offering spam checking on existing comments and 24/7 technical support.

WPBruiser pluginPlugin WPBruiserComment

WPBruiser {no-Captcha anti-Spam} uses algorithms to spot spam comments, avoiding the need for captcha images.

Antispam Bee pluginPlugin Antispam Bee

Antispam Bee blocks comment spam for free without sending your data to a third-party website.

Spam protection, AntiSpam, FireWall by CleanTalk pluginProtection anti-spam, AntiSpam, FireWall par le plugin CleanTalk

Spam protection, AntiSpam, FireWall by CleanTalk is designed to work not only with comments, but also with form plugins including Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms and Mailchimp.

WordPress Zero Spam pluginPlugin WordPress Zero Spam

WordPress Zero Spam is another plugin that avoids the use of captchas and also supports form plugins including Contact Form 7 and Gravity Forms.

All In One WP Security & Firewall pluginPlugin All In One WP Security & Firewall

These can be unpopular with users, especially if you’re using the variety that asks people to identify images with certain objects. But more and more sites now use captcha fields with a simple “I’m not a robot” checkbox, impossible to fill in by a bot.

There are many excellent plugins that allow you to implement this strategy in your WordPress site, and most of them are completely free.

Google Captcha (reCAPTCHA) par BestWebSoft

reCaptcha by BestWebSoftreCaptcha by BestWebSoft

We are big fans of Google’s take on the CAPTCHA, or rather what they call the reCAPTCHA. Google’s is probably one of the cleanest and easiest ones to use without hurting the user experience by asking puzzling questions or showing hard to read letters.

You definitely don’t want someone leaving your site simply because they were frustrated by the CAPTCHA. The Google Captcha (reCAPTCHA) by BestWebSoft plugin works great for implementing this on your WordPress site.

Instead of making you read illegible letters and numbers or identify elements in photographs, this plugin just asks the user to tick a box confirming that they are not a robot. The box can only be ticked manually.

To set it up you will need to use Google’s Captcha API to register your site and select reCAPTCHA v2 for a checkbox or reCAPTCHA v3 for a captcha that uses JavaScript to check for spam without the user having to do anything that is.

You can access it from a link in the plugin settings screens.

Registering your site with Google reCAPTCHARegistering your site with Google reCAPTCHA

You will then receive a site key and a secret key, which you copy into the plugin settings screen on your site. Select Feedback Form in the Enable ReCAPTCHA for section and click the Save Changes button.

Other features include:

  • It also works on registration forms, login forms, password reset forms, etc.
  • Hiding CAPTCHA for whitelisted IPs.
  • Different themes.
  • Multilingual and RTL ready.

Other ReCaptcha Plugins

There are plenty of reCaptcha plugins available, some of which are designed to work with specific third-party plugins such as forms plugins. Many also work with comments.

  • Cerber Security, Antispam & Malware Scan uses Google’s ReCaptcha to stop comment spam and also protects against other kinds of attacks.
  • Simple Google reCAPTCHA is designed to make adding a captcha to your site quick and easy.
  • Advanced noCaptcha & invisible Captcha (v2 & v3) also lets you add invisible Captchas using v3 of the reCAPTCHA API.
  • Stop Spammers is designed to add Captcha to comments and other forms and to prevent spam registrations on your site.

Stop WordPress Spam Comments Using a Third-Party Commenting System

Last but not least, another easy way to stop WordPress comment spam is to forego the default native comments and use a third-party comment system.

We previously used the Disqus platform on our blog here at Kinsta and we can honestly say that it cut out 99% of spam. We never had to spend time cleaning up spam comments.

However, that is not to say Disqus doesn’t have some issues. You can read our blog post about Disqus ad changes. You’ll now have to pay to remove ads from the Disqus interface, which could add up and may impact on your site’s performance and credibility.

Disqus Conditional Load

If you want to use Disqus on your blog, we recommend using the free Disqus Conditional Load plugin. This was developed by Joel James as a way to lazy load comments so that it won’t hurt the performance of your WordPress site.

Install the plugin the normal way, activate it, and register with Disqus. This plugin is more reliable than the official Disqus plugin, so if you still want to use Disqus, you should use this one in its place.

Alternatives to Disqus

If, like us, you’re not impressed by the changes with Disqus, there are alternative third-party commenting plugins you can use instead. Some of these improve on the built-in comments system and others replace it with an alternative one. Here’s a selection.

  • Yoast Comment Hacks lets you customize comments and add settings such as disallowing comments below and above a certain length, redirecting first-time comments to a thank you page, and cleaning up comment notification emails.
  • The Comments – wpDiscuz plugin claims to be the ‘best Disqus alternative’ with similar features.
  • Super Socializer adds social commenting to your site so people can comment using their social media accounts.
  • The Jetpack plugin includes a range of features designed to give you the features of WordPress.com on your self hosted WordPress site (suggested reading: WordPress.com vs WordPress.org), including its own commenting system which uses Akismet to stop comment spam.

Stop WordPress Spam Comments with a Web Application Firewall

Adding a web application firewall (WAF) such as Sucuri or Cloudflare can help dramatically cut back on the amount of spam your WordPress site receives.

Why? Because these services sit between your WordPress host and your website to block and filter out all the bad proxy traffic and bots. They also allow you to easily block entire countries with a click of a button.

A WAF can also help you reduce your bandwidth usage and hits, saving you money on your monthly web hosting bills.
