Resize, rotate and flip objects in Pages on Mac

You can resize an object freely, to change its proportions to your liking, or proportionally, to enlarge or reduce it without changing its essential shape. You can also set it to have specific dimensions. You can rotate or flip any object except a table, chart, web video, or image gallery.

Change the size of an object

  1. Click on an object or a group of objects to select it.

    If you don’t see white squares around the object, the object is locked; you must unlock it before you can change its size.

  2. To choose whether the object resizes freely or proportionally, in the 68c4632627a63911d67bb5a7390b48a1 Format sidebar, click the Arrange tab, then do any of the following:

    • Resize freely: Make sure the “Constrain Proportions” box (under Size) is unchecked.

    • Resize proportionally: Make sure the “Constrain Proportions” box (under Size) is checked.

    Note: Groups containing certain objects can only be resized proportionally. These objects include images and movies that have been rotated, as well as shapes that have a green dot when selected.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Resize freely: Drag a selection handle to the top, bottom, or side (not a corner) of the object.

      This action is only possible if Constrain Proportions is off (see step 2 above).

    • Resize proportionally: Drag a corner selection handle diagonally.

  1. Click on the object to select it or select multiple objects.

  3. Drag the rotation wheel or enter a value in degrees in the adjacent field to specify the angle of rotation of the object.

    Tip: You can also press the Command key while the pointer is over a white square on the object, then drag to rotate it.

Note: You cannot return a table, chart, or image gallery.

  1. Click on the object to select it or select multiple objects.

  3. Click a Flip button (near the rotation wheel) to flip the object vertically or horizontally.

Tip: You can add these buttons to the toolbar: Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical.

When you rotate or flip a shape containing text, the text moves with the shape. To make only horizontal text again, choose Format > Reset Text and Object Identifiers.

You can resize or rotate an image opened in Preview to fit it in a particular location. You can also reduce the file size to save disk space or to download an image faster.

Change the dimensions of an image

    • Force the image to keep its original proportions: select “Proportional scale”. If you change the width or the height, the other value changes to maintain the aspect ratio. If you choose a size from the “Fit to” pop-up menu, the width or height of the image may be smaller than the chosen size to maintain aspect ratio.

    • Reduce the dimensions of the image without losing any detail: deselect “Resample image” before changing the width or height.

Tip: To resize multiple images at once, display the images in the same window, select them in that window’s sidebar, then choose Tools > Resize.

Rotate or flip an image

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Rotate an image: Select the image, then click Rotate Tool Left(or use the Touch Bar ) to rotate the image left. Keep clicking to keep spinning.

      To rotate the image to the right, hold down the Option key and click Rotate tool rightuntil you are done rotating the image.

    • Flip an image: Choose Tools > Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical.

Tip: To rotate or flip multiple images at the same time, display the images in the same window, choose View > Thumbnails, select them in the sidebar of this window, then choose Tools > [Rotate or Flip].

Reduce the file size of an image

  1. In the Preview app 530c85a3f10678e47ca4a56f0a580b22on your Mac, open the file you want to edit.

  2. Choose Tools > Resize, then select “Resample Image”.

  3. Enter a smaller value in the Resolution field.

    The new size is displayed at the bottom.

Tip: To reduce the file size of multiple images at once, display the images in the same window, select them in that window’s sidebar, then choose Tools > Resize.
