Pixlr is a free cloud-based photo editing program that allows users to resize images. When resizing an image, Daktronics recommends starting with an image that matches the dimensions of your screen or does not exceed three times (3x) the size of the panel.

  1. Go to http://pixlr.com/x/
  2. Drag and drop your photo or click “Open Image”2021-12-17_8-06-48.png
  3. To create a transparent image (if you don’t and are just resizing, skip to step 4), click “Crop Left”.2021-12-17_8-09-12.png
  4. Choose “Magic Crop” and adjust your “Tolerance” accordingly. The higher the tolerance, the more sensitive the clipping tool is to removing colors adjacent to the color you select. 2021-12-17_8-10-28.png
  5. Once you have selected your color, all occurrences of the color within the bounds will be removed. If you need to remove all occurrences of the color in the entire image, uncheck “Contiguous”. 2021-12-17_8-18-01.gif
  6. Now go to the “Layout and Template” section and select “Resize Page (Scale)” and resize its height or width, the other will adjust accordingly.
  7. Click “Save” at the bottom and save your image in PNG format.
  8. Normally import the image into the software by following one of the two articles below, depending on the version of the software used.

Resize canvas, images, layers and rotated objects in Pixlr Editor

◄ Teleport me, Scotty!

Resize your image

Resizing an image in Pixlr Editor is easy. With an image open, choose Image > Image Size and resize the image by entering the desired size or using the built-in sliders. If you want your image to have the same aspect ratio after resizing (most likely if you’re editing photos you’ve taken), you need to make sure the “Constrain aspect ratio” option is checked. In this option, increase the height or length and Pixlr will calculate the rest. Not using constrained aspect ratios means your image may look “stretched” after resizing.

Note: canvas size is different from picture size

You can also change the size of your canvas. The canvas is the “Background” layer on which each new image opened in Pixlr is based. It’s your workspace and you can make it as big as you want. Your image will not be affected. You can also rotate your canvas or flip it horizontally or vertically.

Also note that when resizing your canvas, there is no option to limit the aspect ratio as you will not be changing the image itself, but the canvas it sits on. Also note that you can choose where the image will be anchored when you resize your canvas. Here, for example, my image will end up in the lower right corner of my resized canvas:

Free transform: quick and easy resizing

You can also use the free transform feature to resize layers. You won’t have the same level of control over the specific size, but it’s a quick and easy way to resize an image. Choose Edit > Free Transform and drag the blue corner handles until the image is the right size.

Want to resize quickly but keep the same aspect ratio? Hold down the Shift key while resizing.

Rotate an image or layer

The corners also have a rotation option, which lets you rotate or skew your image by hand. Just hover your mouse over the corners to see the rotate option as shown in the image below. An important detail to consider is that text cannot be rotated in this way unless you first rasterize the text, which turns your text into a layer that is an image (and no longer text).

align objects

There is no grid (grid lines) or ruler in Pixlr Editor at the moment, but it is a popular user request that we hope to implement in the future.
