How to make an ask page on tumblr

New Page

How to add a question box to your FAQ page / How to create a custom question page.

OR ANY OTHER PAGE IN GENERAL

last update: July 2018

  1. Make sure your questions box is checked . (under settings , which you can find by clicking the person icon next to the search bar)
  2. To see if your question is enabled, go to your page and add /ask to the url. If it says ‘Not Found’ then it is not enabled and you need to go back and do it.
  3. Go to your personalization  page .
  4. Scroll down to the Pages location, then click  Add Page or edit your existing FAQ/Custom Questions page. (Preferably have your page already written before adding this!)
  5. Click on the <html>  button , where all the markup buttons are (i.e. bolditalic , strikethrough) and make sure it’s blue.
  6. Copy and paste this code below where you want it, and if successful, the code should be green and purple.
  7. Replace the part that says URL with your own URL. eg _   https://www.tumblr.com/ask_form/ URL .tumblr.com  to https://www.tumblr.com/ask_form/ a-pocketful .tumblr.com NOTE: I used a-pocketful as example as it is my URL so please use yours and not mine!
  8. Tap <html> again, then tap Refresh preview to see how it looks on the page.
  9. It will say Request Denied ; ignore that and press ‘Save’. When you visit your page in another tab, you will see that it works on its own.
  10. If there is  nothing here or there is a login page , go back and make sure you have followed step 7 or  your question is enabled .
  11. Hit “Save” and you’re done.

YOU MUST HAVE ACTIVATED YOUR ASK BOX

  • BE SURE TO CHANGE THE LINK IN THE CODE TO YOUR OWN URL ! Just to make sure it works, send yourself a little test message using your new question box, and if you don’t get it, look back and make sure you’re okay.
  • Every time you change your URL you will need to edit your page and update the URL in the code.
  • The layout should be the standard layout  instead of the custom layout.
  • Although it might say REQUEST DENIED , it will still work! Press save and display your page in another tab to see it.

So now you have your custom request page, but because you still have a link to your original page, you have two links and you only want one?

  1. Go to the personalization page .
  2. Click the button that says Edit HTML , next to Custom Theme.
  3. Search (using ctrl+f/command+f)  /ask .
  4. You will find a line in the html that goes along the lines of  <a href=”/ask”>ask</a> . Note that this may be different depending on your theme, but as long as it looks like <a….href=”/ask”>…. </a>
  5. You can remove this line entirely to get rid of the link, or you can replace the part that says /ask with the URL of the chosen page of your custom question page (e.g. /faq or /message or whatever you choose ) so you can say something like <a href=”/faq”>ask+faq</a> instead.
  6. Save and go.

Ask

Requests are more of a one-time Q&A, not a two-way conversation like messaging. And unlike posts, requests can be posted to a blog and reblogged by other users.

As the requester (the sender), you can choose to submit a question as yourself or as an anonymous ghost. As the requester (the recipient), you can choose to respond publicly (by posting to your blog) or privately.

A quirk: you can only respond publicly to anonymous requests, because we don’t know who sent it.

Enable Requests

To enable the web request feature:

  1. Click “Settings” in the account menu at the top of the dashboard, then on the right side of the page choose the blog you want to update.
  2. In the Ask section, enable “Let people ask questions”.
  3. Fill in “Request Page Title” with whatever you want the Request page to be named (and the Request link on your theme if it shows one).
  4. If you want to allow anyone (not just Tumblr users) to ask questions, check the “Allow anonymous questions” box.

And in the app:

  1. Tap the account icon (the little human).
  2. Tap the blog name at the top of the screen to select the blog you want to update, if it’s not already displayed.
  3. Tap the gear icon.
  4. Enable the “Let people ask questions” option.

Note: You can send up to 10 requests per hour, and only five of them can be anonymous.

Sending a request

To send a request (assuming the blog has it enabled):

  • In the app: Go to a blog, tap the person icon, then tap Ask.
  • On the web: hover over a blog name, then choose “Ask” from the meatball menu (●●●).
  • From the blog: look for the ask link, or add /ask or /submit to the end of their URL.

Access your requests

To respond to your requests:

  • In the app: Go to the account tab (the human), then tap the gear icon and choose “Inbox”. Note that the “Inbox” option will not show up if you don’t have any requests or submissions yet.
  • On the web: Click the envelope near the upper right corner of the screen.

Make sure the ask link appears on your blog

Most themes automatically detect when you enable requests. But if you know you have them enabled and you don’t see the link on your public blog, head over to tumblr.com/customize to find the right switch.

If you enable this feature and the link does not automatically appear on your blog, you will need to manually add the link to your blog description.

  1. Click “Settings” in the account menu at the top of the dashboard, then choose the blog you want to update on the right side of the page.
  2. Click “Edit Theme” in the Theme section of the website.
  3. Edit your description to add the links. For example: <a href=”/ask”>Ask me things!</a>
  4. Click “Save” and “Exit”.

repair

If you think your requests are not being delivered, here are the most common reasons:

  • The sender has exceeded the request limit. You can only send 10 requests per hour, and only five of them can be anonymous.
  • The request included links, paragraph breaks, special characters, emoticons, or ellipses, or had no spaces between sentences.
  • The request was longer than 500 characters.
  • The recipient has blocked an entire network location. This can happen if a user blocks an anonymous request sent from a library or other public place. When this happens, no one from that location can send a request to that person.
