How to block Pinterest from Google search results (2022)

Check out three quick and easy ways to learn how to block Pinterest from Google search results on Chromium and Firefox browsers.

Here’s how to block Pinterest from Google búsqueda results using a great Chrome extension called uBlacklist:

  1. Download uBlacklist from Chrome Web Store (also a version of Firefox and Firefox browser add-ons) and install:uBlacklist-download-chrome-store
  2. Then click on the uBlacklist icon on your browser and select the options  :options-ulistenoire
  3. Under ‘Sites blocked from appearing in Google search results’, enter the following: *://*.pinterest.com/* block-pinterest-ublacklist
  4. Click save .

From now on, Pinterest will completely disappear from Google search results. If you want to go back at any time, just delete the code you entered in step 3.

(If your search engine keeps changing to Bing, I’ve written an article to tell you how to fix it.)

uBlacklist is not the only browser extension capable of blocking Pinterest. If you already run uBlock Origin to block ads, you can also exclude Pinterest from Google search results with it.

How to Exclude Pinterest from Google Search Results using uBlock Origin

The uBlock Origin browser is not only a powerful adblocker, but you can also block websites from search results by creating a filter in it.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Download uBlock Origin in the Chrome Web Store (there is also a Firefox version) and install it. ublock-origin-download-chrome-store
  2. Right-click on the uBlock Origin icon on Chrome and select options. ublock-origin-options
  3. Go to My Filters.
  4. Now click on the text box and paste the following code: ! Pinterest Results on Google google.*##.g:has(a[href*=”.pinterest.”]) google.*##a[href*=”.pinterest.”]:nth-ancestor(1) block-pinterest-google-image-search-results-with-Ublock-Origin
  5. Click on Apply Changes.

Now Pinterest will completely disappear from Google Search results. If you want to revert this at any time, just delete the code you entered in step 4.

If you don’t want to install any Chrome extensions, you can also block Pinterest directly on Chrome, but there are some shortcomings as explained below.

How to Block Pinterest from Google Image Searches Without a Plugin

It is also possible to block Pinterest in Chrome (or any Chromium browser) settings.

The drawbacks to this choice are that it works only for searches made in your browser address bar and that it blocks pinterest.com, but not other variants like pinterest.de.

With this in mind, this is how to do it in Chrome browser settings:

  1. Click on the three dots in the upper-right corner of Chrome, then click on Settings.
  2. Now search for manage search engines and site search and select the result: manage-search-engines-and-site-search-chrome
  3. Browse down to site search and click on the Add button: add-site-search-chrome-settings
  4. Go to URL with %s in place of query and enter the following: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s+-site%3Apinterest.com block-pinterest-chrome-settings
  5. Click on Save.
  6. Now click on the three dots next to the created site search and select make default: make-default-site-search-chrome-settings

Now you won’t see Pinterest results anymore on Google Images.

Conclusion

There are three simple ways to block Pinterest from Google Search results. The best one is to simply use the uBlacklist extension, open Pinterest, click on the uBlacklist icon, and select Block.

If you already use uBlock Origin, you can also add a filter on uBlock Origin to exclude Pinterest as explained at the beginning of this article.

If you don’t want to install any Chrome extensions, the alternative is to block Pinterest on Chrome settings by adding a Query URL to apply whenever you make a Google search.

To further improve your search results, it is also very useful to block Quora and to block Youtube Channels from search results.

exclude-site-from-google-serpsQuestion from Paula:  Hi, Rick. Thank you for all your hard work writing and sharing your advice. I have been reading your articles for more years than we care to admit!

I’m wondering if you know of a way to do a Google search for things and have them leave pages from Pinterest out of the search results?

I do a lot of crafts, cooking, etc. and I sometimes get page after page of Pinterest posts that are of no help at all!

Is there a way to “remove” Pinterest from the Google search results?

Thanks!

Rick’s answer:  Hi, Paula. First of all, thanks so much for your kind words about my posts. I’m very glad you find them useful.

To answer your question, you can easily exclude Pinterest posts (or pages from any website for that matter) from your Google searches.

All you have to do is simply append -site:pinterest.com to the end of your search query.

For example, if you were searching for the term “paper crafts”, you would type this into the Google search box:

artisanat en papier -site:pinterest.com

Cette recherche renverrait des pages traitant de “l’artisanat en papier”, mais aucune page du site Web Pinterest ne serait incluse dans les résultats de la recherche.

J’espère que ça t’aidera, Paula. Bonne chance!

First steps with the programmable search engine

Choose the sites to include in your search engine

Next: Change your search engine with the control panel

Adding and excluding pages or sites from your search engine follows the same pattern. Either way, you get three options, each with a different behavior.

Include sites in your search engine:

  1. In the control panel, select the search engine you want to modify.
  2. Click  Setup  from the menu on the left.
  3. In the  Basics  tab, under  Sites to search , click  Add
  4. Enter the URL you want to add and select whether you want to include any pages that match or only that specific page. See the table below for explanations if you aren’t sure which one you want.
  5. Click Save.
Option Behavior
Include all pages whose address contains this URL Any page that contains the URL is selected for inclusion or exclusion. For example, entering www.mysite.com will match www.mysite.com/about .htmlbut will not match blog.mysite.com.
Include just this specific page or URL pattern I have entered.  If you enter a specific page, such as www.mysite.com/about.html, it will only match that exact page. You can also use URL patterns, such as www.mysite.com/*about. If you don’t know how to use URL patterns, see Learn more about URL patterns  below.

Exclude sites from your search engine:

  1. In the control panel, select the search engine you want to modify.
  2. Click  Setup  in the left menu.
  3. On the General tab, click  Advanced under  Sites  to search  to expand the Sites to exclude  section .
  4. Click  Add  under  Sites to Exclude.
  5. Enter the URL you want to exclude and whether you want to include all pages that match or just this specific page. See the table below for explanation if you are unsure which one you want.
  6. Click  Save .
Option Behaviour
Exclude all pages whose address contains this URL Any page containing the URL is selected for inclusion or exclusion. For example, entering www.mysite.com will match www.mysite.com/about.html but will not match blog.mysite.com.
Exclude only this specific page or URL pattern I entered.  If you enter a specific page, such as www.mysite.com/about.html, it will only match that exact page. You can also use URL patterns, such as www.mysite.com/*about. If you don’t know how to use URL patterns, see Learn more about URL patterns  below.

Learn more about URL patterns

  • Entire Domain  If you want to include anything related to a domain in your search results, enter the domain as *.mysite.com/*. This will include all pages in the domain, for example blog.mysite.com and www.mysite.com.
  • Entire Site  If you want to include an entire site, specify the site followed by a generic template. For example, www.mysite.com/* will include all content from www.mysite.com, but not content from blog.mysite.com.
  • Parts of a site If you want to include specific parts of a site, use a URL pattern to specify the part of the site you want to include. For example, www.mysite.com/*dogs will match all URLs that start with www.mysite.com/ and contain the word “dogs”, such as www.mysite.com/dogs.html and www.mysite.com/ lots-of-dogs.html. On the other hand, www.mysite.com/dogs/* will only include pages starting with www.mysite.com/dogs/. It wouldn’t match www.mysite.com/dogs.html.
  • Unique Pages If you want to include specific pages, you can use the page URL. For example, you can specify www.mysite.com/mypage.html to include content from mypage.html in your search results.

More detailed examples are included in this table:

Pattern The description matches Does not match
www.example.com/ Corresponds to a single page www.example.com/example.com/ host.example.com www.example.com/stamps
www.example.com/* Matches all URLs beginning with www.example.com or example.com www.example.com www.example.com/stamps example.com/stamps host.example.com/host.example.com/stamps
www.example.com/*kites Matches all URLs starting with www.example.com/ or example.com/ and containing the word “kites” www.example.com/kites.html www.example.com/kites/page2.html www.example.com/funwithkites.html www.example.com www.example.com/stamps
www.example.com/product.asp*cat=Elec Matches all URLs starting with www.example.com/product.asp and containing the term “cat=Elec” www.example.com/product.asp?sku=20283&cat=Elec www.example.com www.example.com/stamps
www.example.com/*kites*fly Matches all URLs that start with www.example.com/ and contain the words “kites” and “fly” www.example.com/kites/howto/fly.html www.example.com/fly/howto/kites.html www.example.com/kites/help.html www.example.com/help/fly.html
*.example.com/* Matches all subdomains under example.com www.example.com/stamps host.parent.example.com/kites example.com/kites/fly.html example.host.com

Note: URL patterns are case sensitive.

Note: There is an account-level limit of 5,000 URL patterns for all your search engines.

You may want to augment your results with general web search results. This includes results from anywhere on the web, but emphasizes your personalized results. That way, even if they’re looking for content that isn’t on your site, they can find useful results. Note that the results may not match the results you would get by searching on Google web search.

To configure an existing search engine to search the entire web:

  1. In the control panel, select the search engine you want to modify.
  2. Click  Configuration  in the left menu, then click the  Basics tab.
  3. Go to the Search the entire web section and enable or disable this feature.
