You’ve created a line with the Pen tool, but you’re confused about how to add an anchor point in Illustrator. This isn’t always the most intuitive way to add a new anchor point to a line, but here we’ll show you how.

As of Adobe Illustrator 2022, adding an anchor point to a line is quite simple. Draw a shape with the Pen tool, then click anywhere on the path. You will see a small plus sign to indicate that the tool is configured to add points. Very easy!

If you want to subtract points, it can get a little complicated. You can easily press the “-” and “+” keys on your keyboard with the pen tool selected to shift between subtracting and adding. Even though the pen tool adds points by default, changing modes with these shortcuts actually changes the tool. Switching back from subtract to add will change away from the Pen tool. You can add points, of course. But Illustrator is actually switching to the Add Anchor Point or Delete Anchor Point tool, rather than staying on the Pen tool.

If you’d like to always have these tools visible, you can click on Window > Toolbars > Advanced. The Add Anchor Point tool will be added to the toolbar next to the pen tool.

You can temporarily override this all-in-one feature by holding down the Shift key while creating a new shape. This allows you to create an anchor point for a new shape without accidentally adding one to an existing shape. Just be sure to release the Shift key before making your second point, to avoid the Pen tool being limited to only lines on the axis.

Selecting, adding and deleting anchors

To select, move, and delete individual anchors, use the Direct Selection tool. The easiest way to select a controller and activate control lines is to click on an anchor point with the Direct Selection tool. When you hover over an anchor point, the Direct Selection tool cursor displays an open square.

To manually delete anchor points, click the Delete Anchor Point tool from the Pen tool drop-down menu, then click an anchor to delete it. You can also select the anchor with the direct selection tool and press Delete (or Backspace).

To add an anchor point, select the Add Anchor Point Tool from the Pen Tool drop-down menu. Click anywhere on a path to generate a new anchor. The new anchor point takes on the attributes (curved or straight) of the anchors that define the path you clicked. For example, clicking on a straight line segment with the Add Anchor Point tool will create a new right corner point.
