What you need to know before changing your account name

  1. The process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 5 hours, depending on the size of your account.
  2. Usernames, passwords, files and databases will remain unchanged.
  3. Despite this, we recommend that you back up websites and databases and then download them to your computer.
  4. It may be necessary to move the website files for the two affected domains in order for the sites to work after the name change. You will need to move the files from the new main domain to the public_html directory and the files from the old main domain to a subfolder of public_html. The old parent domain can be assigned to this subfolder after the renaming is complete.

This will be your responsibility and may cause some site files, scripts or other applications to become corrupted, requiring modification to work with the new site location.

  5. The new parent domain will point to the public_html directory itself (the same way the parent domain currently does).
  6. Forwarders for these domains will be removed.
  7. Any custom DNS changes made to any of these domains will be lost and will need to be redone. Cloudflare will also be disabled on these domains.

It will probably only take a few minutes, but it could take a few hours.

  8. This will prevent a Weebly site from being published on both the old and the new primary domain (if the customer has already logged in to Weebly).

What You Should Know Before Renaming Your Account

When do I need to change my primary domain?

Changing your primary domain is generally only necessary if you:

  • Would like your users to log in to their accounts using a new primary domain name.
  • Lose ownership of your old domain and would like to remove it from your account.
  • Use Google App Engine, which authenticates via user accounts on the primary domain.
  • Would like consistent branding in Drive shares and Calendar invites, which constantly show the user’s primary email address.

General considerations when changing your primary domain for customers with Google Workspace

  • When you change the domain name, it may take some time for the changes to be seen in your Apps.
  • Changing your domain name doesn’t automatically change the users’ primary email addresses and groups that were provisioned under that domain. You can rename your users to your new primary domain, but first, ensure that you understand the impact of changing a username before you proceed. You can also change a group’s email address.
  • To start receiving mail on the new email addresses, MX records must be set up pointing to G Suite. We strongly recommend that you do this before performing the rename.

A Few Words of Caution

  • Recent Purchase – A rename cannot be processed if you’ve processed any hosting transactions within the last two hours. Hosting transactions include your account’s original purchase, upgrading or downgrading your hosting plan or term length, renewing your hosting term, or canceling a hosting renewal.
  • New Domains – Newly registered domains cannot be canceled after purchase. If you would like the primary domain released, it will only be replaced with the other domain you wish to use as a primary but will not be refunded. The said domain will still be under your ownership for a year, and you may use it whenever you wish to in that duration or let it expire for a single year.
  • Weebly – Changing the primary domain name will break your ability to publish an existing Weebly site on the old and new primary domains. If you’re using Weebly to publish your website on either the current or new primary domain, we highly recommend that you do not change the primary domain name, or you’ll have to rebuild your website(s).

How to Rename Your Account

Make sure to have the current primary domain, the new primary domain, and the last four of your password ready.  Also, confirm that you have read and understood the following information:

  • Domain Management – The current main domain will no longer resolve. If that still needs to be active, please set that as a parked or addon domain after the renewal.
  • Process – The process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 5 hours, depending on the size of your account

Depending on the size of your account, the process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 5 hours.

  • Downtime –  Websites and emails hosted on this account will be unavailable while the system changes your primary domain, which may take a few minutes to an hour.
  • Backups –  Your usernames, passwords, files, databases, etc. will not be modified; However, we strongly recommend that you download a full backup of your website files and databases to your personal computer as a fail-safe against possible file corruption.
  • File Directories –  The new primary domain will point to the public_html directory, similar to how the current primary domain does now.

You are responsible for moving the website files from both domains to their new locations for the sites to function properly.

  • Custom configurations –  All subdomains, custom DNS settings, and email forwarders on both the old and new primary domain will be removed during this process, and it is your responsibility to configure them again once the edit completed.
  • Weebly –  La modification du domaine principal sur ce compte interrompra définitivement la possibilité de publier un site Weebly existant sur les nouveaux et anciens domaines principaux. Vous devrez reconstruire votre ou vos sites Web à partir de zéro.
